CEMBA has finally been accredited. Yay!

The Commonwealth Executive Master of Business Administration (CEMBA) offered by Wawasan Open University (WOU) has finally been accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA). You can read the news here from TheStar.

The course is given the accreditation after the first batch have graduated. I was told that this is one of the requirements set by MQA that the first batch have to complete the entire course before it can be accredited.

The WOU's MBA was already given recognition by the MQA and the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) three years ago. It is only a matter of time before it is to be accredited. So, the day has finally arrived.

In Malaysia, a program has to be given recognition first by the MQA before a private college/university could run that program. Once it has been given recognition, the private college/university could then start offering that program to students. After the first batch of students have graduated, the private college/university could then apply for accreditation from MQA.

This is definitely the selling point for WOU's MBA because there are so many MBAs out there offered by various colleges where the MBA are not even recognised by MQA.

The only biggest competitor for WOU's MBA in Penang is definitely USM's MBA. The Penang branch of Open University Malaysia (OUM) offers an MBA as well. But somehow I wonder why OUM does not do much promotion on its MBA.

Of course there are other MBAs being offered by various colleges in Penang. But I doubt those MBAs are recognised by MQA.

I was told by a lecturer that some courses (especially the executive diploma courses) being offered by a certain public university are not recognised by MQA! I was surprised. So, please do not think that all courses being offered by a public university are recognised by MQA. The one you should be wary of are those executive diploma courses.

The Superbug has reached Malaysia!

The superbug which was first identified in India and Pakistan a couple of months ago has finally reached Malaysia.

A superbug which is resistant to antibiotics has been detected in a 24-year-old woman, the first known case in Malaysia, said Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

The superbug is scientifically known as NDM-1 (New Delhi metallo-lactamase-1). Thankfully, she has recovered after receiving treatment at Ampang Hospital for the past one month.

Excuse me, did I read past ONE MONTH? Yesshh. Looks like the government is hiding this news from us for the past one month. That means she had contracted the superbug one month ago. Did she spread it to anyone else then? Maybe more news are not revealed to us. The news mentioned that she had not travelled overseas. So, she contracted the superbug right here in Malaysia. Okayyy, that's scary.

I wonder then if the superbug is resistant to antibiotics, how did she recover? It was not mentioned in the news what medicine she was prescribed.

I was quite relieved to read that the superbug was only transmitted through direct contact like touching and through wounds, not through the air.

The world's first fatality of the Superbug was a Belgian who got infected in Pakistan after he was hospitalised for a leg injury suffered in a car accident.

The penicillin was only invented in the 1940s which was a great invention to humankind. But after 60 years or so, bacteria have managed to grow resistance towards antibiotics. We are going back to square one.

A bacterium which is resistant to antibiotics is something very scary, just like the MDR-TB and the XDR-TB. The XDR-TB is said to be virtually incurable. It's like being infected with HIV, which is incurable. But there are reports claiming that there are XDR-TB patients who managed to recover, with a recovery rate of roughly 60%.

I felt that this planet is no longer a safe place to live. What killed the dinosaurs? Could it be some superbugs as well? Perhaps. And maybe it could happened again. This time on human beings.

The definition of an Ah Beng and Ah Lian

I begin to realise that I receive readership outside Malaysia, so I reckon I should explain what is an 'Ah Beng'.

Based on my personal encounters with Ah Bengs, here is my personal explanation of Ah Bengs.

Basically, Ah Bengs refer to Chinese men living in Malaysia/Singapore with some distinctive characteristics. On the other hand, Ah Lians refer to Chinese women living in Malaysia/Singapore with some distinctive characteristics. They are like the American equivalent of the Hillbillies. You can read about the American Hillbillies right here in Wikipedia - Hillbilly.

Ah Bengs and Ah Lians usually possess the following characteristics.

- Rude and vulgar
- Lowly educated (yet they can be rich)
- Inept in speaking English
- Only speak in Mandarin or any Chinese dialect.
- Speak very loudly
- A strong follower of the Japanese or Taiwanese fashion
- They love dyeing their hair
- They like modifying their cars
- They like burning really really big incense to pollute the air

It is very unfortunate that my neighbour possesses all of the above characteristics. I used to have nice loving neighbours but they have moved out many years ago. That was the good old days.

Be careful of objects falling from the sky

Yes, especially when you are around some low cost flats. No offence to those staying in those type of flats but seriously you should be wary of falling objects from above.

Recently, a 60-year-old man was killed after being hit by a stone said to have been thrown from the 21st floor of a low-cost block of flats in Jalan Sungai, Penang. You can read the full story from TheStar.

This is not something new. Such news were reported before in the past. All sorts of things were thrown down from such flats such as flower pots, bicycle, TV, fridge, and so forth. There are just crazy people around on our planet.

When I was in the General Hospital, I saw a lot of people waiting at the Psychiatry Department. So, indeed there are people around who are mentally unsound. We shouldn't be worry if they are harmless but sometimes they can get violent and do funny stuff.

Many years ago I attended a BBQ party at my friend's flat in Perak Road. Probably, we got a little too noisy and somebody threw down a packet of ice on us from several stories above. Thankfully, he/she missed us. Penangites will know how notorious Perak Road is. For those who are not from Penang, Perak Road is an area where people say there a lot of gangsters living within that area.

So, ladies and gentlemen, just be careful when you are walking around some low cost flats. I may sound discriminating but it's a fact. The news said so.

Why do I study so much?

A friend once asked me why do I have to study so much?

She told me her husband don't even have a degree and yet he could earn so much. Well, he's a businessman obviously.

I replied her saying that I'm pursuing an academic career and that means I have to study my way up. And yes, I plan to start my PhD research next year.

Anyway, her question made me ponder something about society today. Does this mean that education is no longer important? And it's all about money?

Now I see it. No wonder kids today lack manners. No wonder today the F-word seems to be the norm even among fellow bloggers. No wonder today Ah Beng and Ah Lian generation seems to be on the rise.

Another friend of mine once saw someone drove a Mercedez into a mechanic workshop. My friend was pretty impressed with the car. He was curious to see who was the driver. The driver soon stepped out from the car. And when the driver starts talking on his handphone, vulgar words were the only words that came out from that Ah Beng.

So what do we have here. Yes, he may be making a lot of money but he has no education. So what moral values these Ah Bengs are going to teach their kids? Nothing. It is because you can make a lot of money without proper education.

So what will happened when their child misbehaved in school and get caned by a discipline teacher? The parents will rush to the school demanding an apology from that teacher. That's what happening now. Not surprising. The parents already cannot see what is right and what is wrong, so how can their kids do the same.

So, now I see it. Just walk around shopping malls and you will see kids with nasty manners. Thanks to their Ah Beng parents.

Respiratory Disorder - Episode 17

I went to see the doctor again on 19th October 2010 to get the result of my ANCA blood test.

The result was negative, as told by the doctor.

So, it is unlikely that I am suffering from Wegener granulomatosis.

So, it gets even stranger. If it is not TB, if is not Wegener, if there is no bacteria in my phlegm, that what am I suffering from?

Anyway, my phlegm was sent to Pusat Perubatan Universiti Malaya to be cultured and tested.
I am pretty surprised that nothing was found. No bacterium at all. Well, they did find Candida but this fungus is a common fungus found in anyone's trachea.

Again, the doctor asked me whether I'm keen on doing the needle lung biopsy. I am definitely not keen on anything invasive. Furthermore, I was told that there is a possibility that the lung biopsy might not reveal much.

I am still coughing but it's not as violent as 3 months ago.

I was told to come back 3 months later for another chest x-ray to ensure that whatever abnormality on my x-ray is stable and did not get worse.

I went home wondering what am I suffering from. Could it be hookworm inside my lungs that gave me all this problem? Or could it be a fungal infection - histoplasmosis? Any medical students reading my blog, ohh...please figure it out for me.

I'm addicted to...

The Internet!

I realised this after I couldn't connect to the Internet for almost the entire day today - Thursday!

Soon, I began to feel uneasy when I couldn't get into the Net. I wonder what's in my e-mail. I wonder what's going on in Facebook. I wonder what's going on in my University's forum. And most importantly, now, I couldn't download journal articles for my assignments and research.

Well, life still goes on but...I began to realise that Internet eats up a big chunk of my daily routine!

I had to call up Telekom this afternoon and they said they will call a technician to fix the port.

Thankfully, I checked up the line again and I could access to the Net exactly at 6.57pm just now. It looks like the port has been fixed. Phew!

So I could now blog again...

7 things about myself:

1. I love drawing and illustration. I was once a Chief Artist for my school Catholic magazine board.

2. Strangely, I hate manga. I never liked manga although I like illustration. I like drawing comics which are more attuned to the DC Comics type - realistic comic illustration, not those type with big big manga eyes.

3. I am a compulsive learner. Yes, I have a strong compulsive desire to know and learn everything!

4. I learn almost everything about life through self-help books. I have learnt through books on how to play guitar, music theory, juggling, performing magic tricks, how to do academic research, and courting girls. Well, I can say it works! The one thing I have read and haven't tried is on hypnotising girls to bring her to your bedroom.

5. I'm poor in mental maths despite being an accounting graduate.

6. I'm an introvert and I don't like big crowds. So, I hate parties, gatherings, and all sorts where there are many people around.

7. The irony is that I like public speaking and I dare to boast I'm good at it. Toastmasters Club has trained me to what I am today in terms of public speaking. I have even learnt how to deliver effective stand-up comedy through Toastmasters Club. And yes, I practise stand-up comedy in my classes from time to time without my students knowing about it.

Of course, I would like to share the award with as many bloggers I know of. Wow...It's pretty tiresome to do the linkage and my assignment deadline is coming soon and so that's all I could do about it. Hehe...

What do I want to be when I grow up?

I love sketching since I was small (about 4 or 5 years old)! I would sketch on anything where one could sensibly sketch on such as blank papers, exercise books, cupboards, walls, doors...yes, that's what I'm talking about. Something sensible to sketch on. I would just draw anything. And all I like to do is drawing! So, I wanted to be an artist!

When I was in primary school, I upgraded my drawing skill to some designing skill. I like designing buildings. I remembered back in 1991, I drew up a plan of a twin tower with a bridge connecting the two towers. That was many years wayyy back before the Petronas Twin Tower plan was revealed to the public. My idea was stolen!!

Anyway, I enjoyed looking at pictures of hotels with fancy architectural design and I would like to improvise on the design of the hotels. I was especially impressed with the architectural design of Marina Mandarin Hotel in Singapore at that time. So, I wanted to be an architect!

From buildings, I expanded my design skills to toys, cars, and video games. I was obsessed with Transformers at a particular time and I would design new characters I could think of for Transformers. Yes, I also like to conceptualise new design for cars. So, I wanted to be a designer!

Then came secondary school and I have to put aside my favourite hobby for more serious time of studying. I did put full use of my talent on my Art Education from Form 1 to Form 3. By that time, I wanted to be graphic designer after knowing that there is such occupation.

When I was in Form 4, I chose to go the arts stream since I loveeee art. Many people were shocked over my decision as they expect me to choose the science stream. Well, it is a decision that I never regret. Somehow, by now, I began to think pragmatically and I aimed to be an accountant.

But when I was in Form 5, I was told about the advertising industry, for which I have never heard of until that day. So, I wanted to be an advertising creative director! I'd love to design advertisements for everyone to see!

Somehow after SPM, I studied accountancy. It is something that I am not really passionate about. However, I had to pursue accountancy because a design course fees is really really expensive such as in Limkokwing or in The One Academy compared to an accountancy course.

Now, finally after all these years, I have found another field which I am passionate about. The academic research field! So now, I wanted to be an academic researcher!

Mischievous students

When I was teaching in College XXX (a college where rich spoilt kids like to go), I saw unimaginable things that I thought it only happened in schools.

There was a case where someone or a group of mischievous students threw down wet tissue papers down on someone's car. I'm talking about lots and lots and lots of wet tissue papers. The entire windscreen of that poor fella's car was covered with wet tissue papers. LoL... Well, the victim was a girl. Eyewitnesses claimed that the wet tissue papers were thrown down from a few storeys above.

The parents of that student came to the college to complain to the principal.

With help from eyewitnesses, the college's management staff managed to identify the classroom from where it was thrown. Based on the time and classroom number, the management staff knew the students (of a particular semester of a particular course) who did it, but they are unable to pinpoint exactly who did it. So, case closed.

Eventually, I found out that the students who were in that class at that particular time were my students! I'm not surprise at all. Rich spoilt kids.

There was another incident where someone threw an ice cream with a cone down on someone's car. Could it be the same culprit? Perhaps. I didn't know much about this case because it happened before I joined the college.

College XXX....what a college!

MDR - TB (Report from The Star)

WHO has endorsed a new laboratory equipment that can diagnose multi-drug resistant TB (MDR-TB) within 90 minutes instead of two months.

WHO Stop TB Western Pacific Re­­gio­­nal Office adviser Dr Catharina van Weezenbeek said the simple de­­vice would be able to differentiate MDR-TB from the normal TB infection through genetic changes in the microbacterium.

“Until two years ago, it was difficult to diagnose MDR-TB but last week, WHO endorsed a new laboratory equipment, which is a revolution to TB control,” she told The Star.

Anyway you might ask what is MDR-TB. It is multi drug resistant TB - a pretty pretty dangerous form of TB which is difficult to cure. There is another type - XDR-TB (Extensively drug resistant TB), which there is no cure at all. Bad, bad...

So ladies and gentleman, please be careful.

Why do we study? We study for ourself or for our parents?

That's the question one of my ex-student posed in his facebook account a few months ago.

I feel like slapping myself in the head when I saw that post. Don't you too?

I used to teach in a particular college and I find some of the students there don't deserve to be there. They are in the college just because there parents want them to be there. Some of them are so rich that they do not know the reason why education is important. They just don't seem to be interested in their studies.

There are unfortunate people around who want to further their studies but do not have enough money to study. It is sad to see that there are rich students who don't appreciate that they have a chance to study but yet don't make good use of that opportunity.

I used to teach in two different colleges. One college is like a budget college meant for the poor and the other college which I recently joined is a 'luxury' college where there are a lot of rich students in it. And yes I saw a big difference between the students in these two colleges. The rich students lack discipline and have no interest on their studies. Some of them played with their handphones in the class, some of them didn't even bring their notes/textbooks to class, and some didn't even bother to hand in their assignments.

I don't see such students when I was teaching in the so called budget college. They are very disciplined and studious and I respect those students.

Why do Chinese eat Mandarin oranges? The answer is...

Family Unity/Family Reunion!

Told ya...the answer is very simple and pragmatic. You may want to read my earlier post first.

First of all, one can easily peel off a Mandarin orange unlike a Sunkist orange where you need a knife.

So, the Professor explained that during Chinese New Year, the head of the family will peel off a Mandarin orange and distribute piece by piece to each of his family member (assuming in a big Chinese family setting) in a typical round table. So, it helps to cement a stronger relationship between each other during Chinese New Year. Ultimately, it fosters family unity and togetherness.

The same goes with steamboat and yee sang. It made everyone and each family member far away to come together to enjoy a meal together during Chinese New Year - only once a year. It made sense, doesn't it?

So, it has nothing to do with luck, according to the Professor. Well, I agreed.

Hmm...I think I should have blogged this during the Chinese New Year period to coincide with that celebration instead of now. :)

Why do Chinese eat Mandarin oranges?

I attended a talk once and there was this Professor who posed this question. So, why do Chinese eat Mandarin oranges during Chinese New Year? There was a long pause before someone finally uttered 'good luck' as the answer.

The Professor (who is not a Chinese) replied that 'good luck' is not the actual reason why Chinese eat Mandarin oranges.



I like this question because it made everyone dumbfounded when he said that good luck is not the original reason why Chinese eat Mandarin oranges. I always know that Chinese love following old traditions without knowing the actual reason behind it.

I believe that some unscrupulous businessmen have been telling everyone to buy their mandarin oranges during Chinese New Year for 'good luck'. Indeed, mandarin oranges sound like 'gold' in cantonese.

When the Professor finally revealed the actual reason why Chinese eat Mandarin oranges in the olden days, everyone was surprised. I find the reason to be very logical and very pragmatic.

So, do you think you know why Chinese eat Mandarin oranges during Chinese New Year? No, it is not good luck.

Come back to me once you know the answer. In fact, the reason is just very simple and pragmatic. So think about it.

Respiratory Disorder - Episode 16

I have finished my fluconazole medication after two weeks and so, it is time to see the doctor again on 5th October 2010.

I reached there at 11am just to take my x-ray and to come back at 2pm. The x-ray was needed to compare with the earlier x-ray I took just two weeks earlier to see whether the fluconazole has cured me. I felt uneasy taking several x-ray in just a couple of weeks. I don't want to be exposed to too many radiation. Well, what to do as such procedure is needed to diagnose me.

I came back at 2pm and as usual she checked my lungs using the stethoscope. The x-ray findings was that there were no different compared to x-ray findings two weeks ago. The fluconazole was not really useful.

So she began asking me whether I'm keen on doing the lung biopsy. I took a few couple of minutes thinking whether I should go for it. So I began imagining of some long long long needle being inserted into my lungs. Hmmmm...okayyy that will be painful.

I decided not to do it as I felt it is rather invasive and there is a risk of bleeding or even pneumothorax after the biopsy. Ok, what is pneumothorax?

It is not going to be a nice experience when your lung collapse

Pneumothorax happens when your lung collapse and you will get severe chest pain and breathing difficulties. When that happens, a tube will have to be inserted into the affected lung to drain away the air leakage. That will require a few days of hospitalisation. Anyway if I were to do the lung biopsy, I need to be hospitalised for one night to let them monitor me after the biopsy...because there is a risk of pneumothorax. It's not safe to return home after the lung biopsy because you never know if you will get it. Not only that, the lung biopsy will be performed guided by a CT scan. This means I will be exposed to radiation again. CT scan radiation is 500 times the radiation of a normal x-ray. Ok, that is even worse.



I decided not to the lung biopsy, yet. But I told the doctor I am willing to take a blood test to check for ANCA (antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies) in my body. So I took the blood test after seeing the doctor. The ANCA blood test was needed to check whether I'm suffering from Wegener granulomatosis, which is a rare disorder. It is not an infection. It is a disorder. What is this Wegener thingy? There will be a lot of info to blog about and I will blog about it in the future.

So, I will be seeing the doctor in two weeks time to know the blood test result. Anyway, the blood test will not be an accurate diagnosis to check for the Wegener disorder. But a positive result can strongly support the diagnosis. However, a negative result does not mean I do not have it. A lung biopsy is still needed to be performed.

Burger King in Penang

So it is really true that Burger King has finally arrived in Penang. I thought it was just a rumour. So it looks like Cosmo Restaurants Sdn Bhd which CIMB Private Equity has a 60% ownership stake on it finally decided to expand Burger King to Penang. In another words, CIMB owns Burger King in Malaysia.

I remember trying out Burger King back in 1998 in the newly opened Burger King outlet in the Sungai Buloh Overhead Bridge overlooking the PLUS highway. That outlet which was opened in 1997 was the very first Burger King outlet opened by Cosmo Restaurants. I can still remember it was very crowded at that time just like the Burger King outlet in Penang now.

The last time I had Burger King was 2007 in the Sungai Buloh outlet, again. I was there during lunch time which was supposedly a peak period but the restaurant looked really empty! Will the same fate befalls on our Penang outlet in the future? Nevertheless, let's enjoy some Burger King in Penang for now....

There was a realllyyy longggg queue on Sunday afternoon at Burger King Penang....

According to Bernama, Cosmo Restaurants is undergoing some expansion now to open up more Burger King outlets throughout Malaysia. They plan to open up 50 more outlets in the next few years. Another Burger King outlet in addition to the Sungai Pinang outlet will be launched in Penang as well. That sounds nice! Now, I don't have to eat Big Mac at McD again anymore.... I have more choices now!

Awesome Whopper! Somehow, I will always order a Whopper whenever I eat out at Burger King.

It's a strategic corner lot and it is the only shop to open in this row of shophouses. Will this place be the new E-Gate Penang? Cosmo Restaurant must have foreseen the probable future development within this area.

I got myself a table with a nice view. It does remind me of E-Gate.

Burger King, I will be back!

BlogFest Asia 2010!

BlogFest Asia 2010 was held in Wawasan Open University on the 2nd and 3rd of October 2010. I believed I should congratulate the university for staging a successful event and promoting Malaysia (and itself, of course) to the world. Various nationalities from various countries especially Asia converged in this university for two days.

I spoke to a few couple of participants who had attended the dinner in QEII and their replies made me regret for not coming to the dinner on 1st October 2010. Nevertheless, I did enjoy the complimentary breakfast, lunch, and dinner hosted in this university the next day. Below are some of the pictures taken while I was there.

Security and privacy on the Internet - one of the workshops I attended. The speaker which hail from the Philippines is very knowledgeable! He cautioned everyone not to reveal too many personal details on the Internet especially on your Facebook account because there are some bad people who might use your personal information for the wrong reason.

Respiratory Disorder - Episode 15

If you have read Episode 2, you would have remembered that I have an appointment with GH on 30th September.

After having the delicious loh mee for breakfast, I headed to GH. I handed in my appoinment card at 8.30am and I was asked to pay a fee of RM5.

As usual, the doctors will only come in at 9.30 am. So, I went outside to an open area and read my book. I don't like hanging around in the respiratory department because there are many people like me who are coughing there. So I believe some TB germs, pneumonia virus, bronchitis virus, H1N1 virus, common cold virus are flying around there in the waiting area. Paranoid, I am.

When I came back to the respiratory department at 9.30am, there was a huge crowd waiting already. So where shall I sit? I decided to stand along the corridor facing the open air.

Here I am waiting. TB germs and all sorts of virus and bacteria are floating in this waiting area. Yes, paranoid I am. I was waiting in the corridor between the respiratory department on my left and psychiatry department on my right.

Probably they are suffering from depression. I have also seen some, from their facial expression, I already know they are mentally unsound.

While waiting, I saw some guys walking on the roof. Don't ask me what are they doing on the roof. Mentally unsound?

After waiting for an about hour, I was finally called in. It is the same doctor I saw last time - Doctor V. Doctor V told me that the culture of my phlegm is negative for TB and they also found nothing in my phlegm. No other germs.

I told Doctor V that I have seen another doctor in Island Hospital. So she asked me whether I would like to continue seeing her in GH. I replied telling her that I prefer following up in Island Hospital compared to GH. Doctor V also agreed that the waiting time in GH is quite long and told me that Island Hospital is good.

Before I left, I told Doctor V that Doctor L in Island Hospital said that there is a possibility of a tumour. So, Doctor V took a look at my x-ray again. After looking at the x-ray, she said that it is unlikely a tumour. The abnormality on my x-ray looks more like an infection.

So I told her that the initial findings from the bronchoscopy was that they found Candida in my phlegm. So Doctor V told me that it could a fungus infection then.

I thanked her and I left GH for good, hopefully I don't have to come back again.

My next appointment is on 5th October at Island Hospital. So, stay tuned...
