Wanna be the Marlboro Man?

This is how Phillip Morris markets its Marlboro cigarattes. The Marlboro Man! The Marlboro Man was conceived by the advertising firm, Leo Burnett in 1954.

The Marlboro Man is the archetypal symbol of rugged independence, freedom, space, and Americana. It's the way to entice smokers to be a free, independent, macho cowboy in the Old West!
Well, the advertising campaigns worked successfully, at least in the past. Due to heightened antismoking sentiment and health concerns, the public living in developed countries no longer yearn to be the Marlboro Man.

So, tobacco industry giants, such as Phillip Morris, are targeting smokers in developing countries such as China, Russia, India and of course South East Asia to entice them to be the Marlboro Man!

Now, even women in these developing countries began to smoke believing that smoking is a symbol of an improved status in the society.

So, do you want to be the Marlboro Man?

This is Wayne McLaren, an American actor who portrayed The Marlboro Man in Marlboro's advertisements in the 1970s. Cool, eh!

This is Wayne McLaren (1940 - 1992) again. He died in 1992 due to lung cancer.

So do you still want to be the Marlboro Man?

Great sharing. I hate people smoking (indeed, especially the odour, not to mention the consequences to him/ her or even us), but sometimes I advice people around me stop doing that, anyway, they have the choice to choose. Quite disappointed of that when they turn your advice down ><

THIS IS WHY I HATE CIGARETTES WITH A PASSION. ITS RETARDED AND A WASTE OF MONEY. WHEN YOU CAN BUY DINNER FOR A CHILD ... YOUD RATHER BUY A PACK OF SMOKES. REALLY? WAKE UP... YOUR SMOKING KING IS DEAD FROM SMOKING.
WAKE UP PEOPLE AND STOP SMOKING.

The story of Wayen McClaren is indeed a sad one, but if you want to see a couple of true stories that'll make your hair stand on end, check out what happened to the young actor Jack Wild from "Oliver" and "H.R. Puffenstuff" fame. Poor guy went through hell before dying young from lung cancer. Had his tongue cut out and everything. Then there's the story of young Bryan Curtis... a man who died a scant 8 weeks after diagnosis of oat-cell lung cancer from smoking. What a heartbreaking story... he was only 33.

DO NOT SMOKE.

Dying of lung cancer is a bad way to go. Really bad.

But one should know that everything we choose to do has consequences. Some are good, some are bad.

And portraying a man on his death bed is just as tasteless as smoking is.

Everybody has two choices:
Either you light one or you don't.

And everybody deserves respect nonetheless.

Smoking is addictive as hell. Don't start if you don't want to pay the price.

your message is great, but you are a fool to say that Russia is a developing country. I am not Russian by any means, but have worked there as an expat, and I can tell you that "being fit" has become a fad there in the past 6-7 years. Smoking has is becoming aggressively on the decline, proven by the constant drastic rising of prices, as well as the new laws being implemented regarding no smoking in public, let alone in any indoor facilities (unlike Canada, where I'm from, where you can smoke anywhere outside). Don't be an idiot by putting other nations down without proper research.

Are you paying over $5 per pack of cigs? I'm buying my cigs from Duty Free Depot and I'm saving over 50% from cigarettes.
